Pepper Tales is built on inherited recipes, a clay oven, and an uncompromising sourcing standard — all rooted in San Jose's Japantown.
From Swaad to Pepper Tales
The name changed. The recipes didn't. Formerly Swaad Indian Cuisine, Pepper Tales is named for pepper — the elemental spice that has anchored Indian cooking for centuries and defines every dish we make.
The Clay Oven Runs Everything
The tandoor isn't a technique — it's the foundation. Every Tandoori Mint Chicken Tikka and Lamb Chop emerges from intense clay-oven heat with a char and smoke no other method can replicate.
The Farmers Fresh Standard
We chose our sourcing partner before we finalized the menu. Every protein is 100% Zabiha Halal, organic, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free — sourced exclusively through Farmers Fresh.
Japantown Is Home
498 N 13th Street puts us steps from Backesto Park and down the road from SJSU — where students, families, and South Bay regulars have made this table their own.
The Community Has Spoken
4.8 stars on Google across 900+ reviews. 4.7 on Yelp. Ranked #3 restaurant in San Jose. The food does the talking.
